Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
Grant Contract Signing Ceremony
13th March, 2014
On 13th March 2014 between His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Ms. Fannie Msimuko, Dowa District Commissioner signed a grant contract for the Project for Sintala-Mtiti Bridge Construction in Dowa District. The grant signed amount to $71, 245 (about K28, 996, 715 at present value) provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
Absence of a bridge at Mtiti River in Dowa District obstructs access to school, health facilities and markets among people of Sintala community in Dowa District. This problem is more compounded during the rainy season when the river gets full and becomes impassable. This has contributed to increased cases of school dropout rate among children, failure to access medical services and markets. In addition, it has also led to deaths among several people that braved to cross the river.
After project completion incidences of school dropout rate will reduce and access to medical services will improve. The project will also improve access to markets and provide safety among the people. It is estimated that about 40 000 people most of which are women and school going children will benefit from the project. The occasion was witnessed by Honourable Ephraim Kayembe, M.P. Dowa West Constituency and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation and graced by Honourable Godfrey Kamanya, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.
